Thank you! I wasnt so sure about it at first cause of all the grays and Id had the Saiyuki layout for so long but its really grown on me. ^_^ So much love for Classic Trek!
It was my childhood. Back then, there was only one trek and my best friend and I would watch TOS every night on the independent television station (which we barely got) and then give each other impromptu quizzes in science class while the other kids were running wild and tormenting the class gerbils. 7th grade... that was right after Wrath of Khan had come out and re-energized interest in trek (at least among the geeks, who were all alone and lonely since there was no interwebz through which to connect!) Forgive me for waxing nostalgic... Good teims (well, actually, they were fairly horrible teims, but Trek and my bestie made them bearable!)
I was raised on both TOS and TNG-Im so glad Ive gotten back into it over this past year. Wrath of Khan came out exactly 3 months before I was born actually!
You youngster, you! I was born the year TOS was cancelled! I have to admit, I never really warmed up to TNG. I watched every episode and have seen all the movies, and I never hated it but it is my least favorite of the ST series (not counting Enterprise, perhaps). I think that is because I was comparing it too much to TOS and because the first season was so derivative of TOS. I adore DS9 though...
As enamored as I was on TNG as a kid...I really dont like it much now.It hasnt stood up to time nearly as well as TOS has.Data isnt nearly as interesting as they were trying to make him either.I also dont like how the characters tended to resolve conflicts by screaming at each other and then being all happy immediately afterward after Berman took over. I LOVE DS9 though-so much grittier and a more badass Captain-Sisko is no Jim Kirk but he's damn close.Voyager is the only series I cant stand. As for the TNG movies...the only good one was First Contact. Generations makes me rage pretty hard over what they did to Jim.The other two are just plain shitastic.
Yes, grittier and darker with great story arcs and incredible recurring characters. The aliens on that show were practically Shakespearean! Love for DS9!!
It is funny because TNG was closer than TOS to Roddenberry's "vision" but things were just too perfect and too happy and too P.C. for any real conflict to take place among the main characters. Not so for DS9 where war and prejudice and other great plot devices were thriving.
I actually liked Voyager quite a bit, though it was a lot fluffier than TOS or DS9 - I really enjoyed the Doctor and Seven. The ending was a train wreck though. I just pretend it didn't end that way.
I need to pay up my LJ account. I lost all of my ST icons when they downgraded me!!
I do so love when Trek gets Shakespearean! I still think a big reason ended up TNG so perfect, happy, and PC was Gene being butt-hurt at Paramount for taking away his control over the TOS movies after the first one. Voyager got boring for me really quick and I didnt like any of the characters besides Tom Paris. And even he's kinda meh.The perpetually lost in space thing wasnt my cup of tea much either.Glad that somebody agrees with me tho that the ending was a clusterfuck. So was Enterprises ending. I actually like ST5! Plot is horrid but the character interactions are at their best written of any of the movies.Well...Jim,Spock and Bones at least. I really should write up my rant on how much I hate Trek 11 sometime. That movie is bad.
The 2009 movie.I have no problem with the casting...tons of problems with most of the rest of it.Especially with how much they fucked up the characterizations of Jim and Spock.
Oh, oh! The re-launch. Hmm... YOu know, at first I was ready to really be angry about that, but they set it up as an alternate reality and gave both of those characters fairly different backgrounds from the "Jim" and "Spock" we knew, so I don't have as much of a problem with it as I might have otherwise. I think the whole "parallel dimension/alternate reality" forgives a multitude of sins and allows them to take the story in whichever way they want to go. I also decided that if eight-million people can interpret superman or Sherlock Holmes or Zorro(all in slightly different ways) why not let the ST canon characters step into that kind of eternal status? At least it will keep the star trek mythos living into eternity, for generations to come, right? Everyone has their favorite James Bond, now they can have their favorite captain Kirk; ours is clearly Shatners Kirk, but others and some youngsters, can prefer Chris Pine (and be wrong). That's how I've decided to see it at any rate.
